Skin Cancer Checks

Skin cancer is highly prevalent in Australia, which has one of the highest rates in the world. With our sunny climate and outdoor lifestyle, regular skin checks are vital for early detection and prevention.

At Sippy Downs Family Clinic, our doctors are trained in skin cancer medicine and are committed to providing comprehensive care — including full-body skin checks, diagnosis, treatment, and patient education.

We’re here to help you and your family stay protected, informed, and proactive about your skin health.

Why Regular Skin Checks Matter
Skin cancer often develops silently, without pain or symptoms in the early stages. However, if caught early, most skin cancers are highly treatable. Regular skin checks allow us to detect changes in your skin before they become serious.

You may be at higher risk of developing skin cancer if you have:

  • Fair skin, freckles, or light-coloured eyes
  • A history of sunburn or tanning
  • A family or personal history of skin cancer
  • Numerous or unusual moles
  • A weakened immune system

Even if you don’t meet these criteria, routine skin checks are still strongly recommended—especially living in Australia’s high-UV environment.

Our Skin Cancer Services Include:

  • Comprehensive full-body skin checks using dermoscopy
  • Mole and lesion mapping and photography for monitoring
  • Diagnosis and biopsy of suspicious moles or lesions
  • Cryotherapy (freezing) for benign or pre-cancerous lesions
  • Surgical excision of confirmed or high-risk skin cancers
  • Referral to specialists, including dermatologists and plastic surgeons, if required
  • Follow-up and skin surveillance plans for patients with a history of skin cancer

Common Types of Skin Cancer We Manage: We assess and treat all forms of skin cancer, including:

  1. Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC):
The most common and least aggressive form. Grows slowly and rarely spreads but may cause local tissue damage if untreated.
  2. Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC):
Can grow more rapidly and has the potential to spread to other parts of the body. Often arises in sun-exposed areas.
  3. Melanoma:
The most serious and potentially life-threatening form of skin cancer. Early detection is crucial for successful treatment.

Skin Cancer Prevention Tips: Our team also focuses on educating patients on how to reduce their risk of skin cancer. We recommend:

  • Using SPF 30+ (or higher) broad-spectrum sunscreen daily
  • Wearing protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses
  • Seeking shade during peak UV times (10am–3pm)
  • Avoiding tanning beds and excessive sun exposure
  • Performing regular self-skin checks at home and looking for any changes

When to See Us: If you notice any of the following, it’s important to book a skin check promptly:

  • A new mole or spot that looks different from others
  • A spot that changes in size, shape, or colour
  • A sore that doesn’t heal
  • A mole that bleeds, itches, or becomes crusty
